Working Principle
Hot oil flows inside the tubes (tube side) or on the shell side (outside the tubes), while a secondary fluid (coolant/heat source) flows counter-currently or cross-currently on the opposite side. Baffles force the shell-side fluid to repeatedly sweep across the tube bundle, thereby enhancing turbulence and the heat transfer coefficient. Heat is transferred through the tube walls to heat or cool the oil to meet process temperature requirements (e.g., cooling hydraulic oil from 60°C to 40°C, or heating crude oil from 40°C to 80°C).
