The shell, heat transfer tube, tube plate, baffle, and tube box make up the stainless steel shell and tube heat exchanger.Most shells have tube bundles within and are cylindrical in shape, with both ends fastened to the tube plate.For heat exchange, there are cold and hot fluids: one flows within the tube and is referred to as the tube side fluid; the other flows outside the tube and is referred to as the shell side fluid.

Working principle

Baffles are typically inserted in the shell to increase the fluid's ability to transport heat outside of the tube. The tube bundle must be traversed by the fluid several times in order to cover the required distance thanks to the baffles' ability to raise fluid velocity and boost turbulence. On the tube plate, the heat exchange tubes may be placed in a square or an equilateral triangle. The square layout is practical for cleaning the exterior of the tube and is appropriate for fluids that are easily scaled. The equilateral triangle arrangement is relatively compact, the fluid outside the tube is very turbulent, and the heat transfer coefficient is considerable.
