How to improve the sealing performance of pressure vessels

Nov 06, 2024

1. Optimize the design of sealing structure
Reasonably select the sealing form:
Select the appropriate sealing form according to the working pressure, temperature, medium and other conditions of the pressure vessel. For example, for high-pressure and high-temperature containers, metal gasket seals or self-tightening seals can be used; for low-pressure and normal-temperature containers, rubber gasket seals or O-ring seals can be used.
At the same time, consider factors such as the reliability, installation convenience and maintenance cost of the sealing form.
Precisely design the sealing surface:
The shape and size of the sealing surface have an important influence on the sealing performance. When designing, ensure that the sealing surface is flat and smooth, without defects such as scratches and depressions.
Reasonably determine the width and angle of the sealing surface to ensure that sufficient sealing pressure ratio can be generated under working pressure. For example, for flat sealing, the width of the sealing surface can be appropriately increased to improve the sealing reliability; for conical sealing, select a suitable cone angle to ensure the self-tightening effect.
Optimize bolt connection:
Bolt preload is one of the key factors to ensure sealing performance. By accurately calculating the preload of the bolt, ensure that sufficient pressure can be maintained between the sealing surfaces under working pressure.
Arrange the bolt positions reasonably to make the sealing surface evenly stressed. Use high-strength bolts and check the tightening of the bolts regularly to prevent loosening.
2. Select suitable sealing materials
Consider the performance of the material:
The sealing material should have good elasticity, plasticity, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and low temperature resistance. Select suitable sealing materials according to the working conditions of the pressure vessel.
For example, for corrosive media, corrosion-resistant polytetrafluoroethylene, fluororubber and other materials can be selected; for high temperature environments, high temperature resistant materials such as graphite and metal gaskets can be selected.
Ensure material quality:
Choose a reliable sealing material supplier to ensure that the material performance meets the requirements. Carry out strict quality inspection of sealing materials, including appearance inspection, physical property testing and chemical composition analysis.
Avoid using inferior or expired sealing materials to avoid affecting the sealing performance.
3. Improve manufacturing and installation quality
Strictly control processing accuracy:
The sealing surface of the pressure vessel is processed with high precision to ensure that the flatness, roughness and dimensional accuracy meet the design requirements. Use advanced processing equipment and processes to improve processing quality.
For example, use CNC machining centers to process the sealing surface to ensure machining accuracy and surface quality.
Ensure welding quality:
If the sealing part of the pressure vessel is connected by welding, the welding process should be strictly controlled to ensure welding quality. Use appropriate welding methods and welding materials to conduct adequate pre-welding preparation and post-welding inspection.
Perform non-destructive testing on welded joints, such as radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing, to promptly detect and deal with welding defects.
Standardize installation operations:
When installing pressure vessels, strictly follow the installation instructions. Ensure that the sealing surface is clean and free of debris, and the sealing gasket is installed correctly and without damage.
Use the correct bolt tightening sequence and torque to make the sealing surface evenly stressed. Avoid forced installation or use of inappropriate tools to avoid damaging the sealing structure.
4. Strengthen operation and maintenance management
Control working conditions:
During the operation of the pressure vessel, strictly control parameters such as working pressure, temperature and medium flow rate to avoid overpressure, overtemperature or excessive medium flow rate.
Regularly inspect and maintain the pressure vessel to promptly detect and deal with problems with reduced sealing performance.
Do a good job of maintenance:
Regularly inspect and maintain the sealing structure, and replace aging and damaged sealing materials and components. Tighten and inspect the bolts to ensure that the preload meets the requirements.
Keep the pressure vessel clean to avoid contamination or corrosion of the sealing surface. Perform anti-corrosion treatment on the sealing parts to extend the service life of the sealing structure.
Train operators:
Strengthen the training of pressure vessel operators to improve their operating skills and safety awareness. Operators should be familiar with the sealing structure and working principle of the pressure vessel, and master the correct operating methods and maintenance knowledge.
Strictly abide by the operating procedures to avoid the decline of sealing performance or safety accidents due to improper operation.
