Structure and Main Components

1. Shell: A cylindrical container housing the tube bundle and shell-side fluid.

2. U-tube Bundle: The core heat exchange element, composed of U-shaped metal tubes (carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper alloy, etc.) arranged in a regular pattern.

3. Tube Sheet: A single thick plate used to secure both ends of all the U-tubes.

4. Tube Box (Head Cover): Mounted on the tube sheet, distributing and collecting the tube-side fluid.

5. Baffle Plate: Installed on the shell side, supporting the tube bundle, guiding the shell-side fluid flow, and enhancing turbulence and heat transfer. A common type is the arc-shaped baffle plate.

6. Pass Divider (Optional): Installed inside the tube box, dividing the tube side into 2-pass, 4-pass, etc., to increase the tube-side flow velocity and heat transfer coefficient.

Working principle

One fluid flows through the tubes and exits the heat exchanger; the other fluid circulates outside the tubes inside the cylindrical shell. Heat is transferred from one fluid to another through the pipe wall. The flow path of the fluid within the cylindrical shell is directed through the vessel by baffles, which has the effect of increasing the flow path and contact time for the heat transfer exchange of the fluid.
