How Long Does It Take for Scale to Form on a Plate Heat Exchanger?

Jun 08, 2026

1. High-Risk, Rapid Scale Formation Scenario: If untreated, high-hardness groundwater or industrial circulating wastewater is used directly, and the operating temperature exceeds 70℃ and the flow velocity is below 0.4m/s, a noticeable scale layer will typically form within 3-6 months. Some wastewater with high suspended solids may even clog the flow channels within 3 months.

2. Moderate Scale Formation Scenario under Normal Operating Conditions: Using simply filtered municipal tap water, with a normal operating temperature of 50-70℃, scale that affects heat exchange efficiency will generally accumulate within 8-12 months. This is why the industry standard requires cleaning once a year.

3. Low-Risk, Slow Scale Formation Scenario: With softened, high-quality water, and with the operating temperature stable below 40℃ and the flow velocity maintained within a reasonable range of 0.8-1.5m/s, the scale formation rate will be significantly slowed down. A noticeable scale layer affecting performance will typically form within 1.5-2 years.
