What are some methods to prevent scale buildup in plate heat exchangers?

Jun 10, 2026

1. Source water quality control (the most crucial method): Install a filtration device and water softener at the inlet to remove calcium and magnesium hardness ions and suspended particles. For high-hardness water sources, use ion exchange or reverse osmosis for deep softening. Simultaneously, scientifically add environmentally friendly scale and corrosion inhibitors to suppress inorganic salt crystallization and deposition.

2. Optimize operating parameters to reduce contributing factors: Control the hot-side outlet temperature to no more than 70℃ (adjustable according to medium characteristics) to avoid high temperatures promoting scale precipitation; maintain the inter-plate flow velocity at 0.5-2.5 m/s, relying on fluid flushing to reduce fouling; minimize frequent start-ups and shutdowns, maintain stable temperature and pressure operation, and avoid localized flow stagnation and overheating.

3. Regular Preventative Cleaning: Continuously monitor inlet and outlet pressure differentials and outlet temperature daily, addressing any abnormalities promptly. Under normal operating conditions, schedule routine cleaning every 6 months to 1 year; shorten the cleaning cycle for scenarios with high scaling risk. For minor scaling, online backflushing or chemical circulation cleaning can be used. If the pressure drop increases by more than 10%, disassemble and perform offline cleaning to remove initial scale buildup.

4. Select Anti-Scale Configurations During Equipment Selection: When purchasing equipment, prioritize plates with high surface finish and corrosion resistance, such as 316L stainless steel or titanium, to reduce scale adhesion. Match high-temperature and chemically resistant gaskets to the media. Plates with special anti-scale surface treatments can further reduce scale adhesion.

5. Standardized Daily Monitoring and Management: Regularly test water quality indicators and adjust softening treatment plans and scale inhibitor dosages promptly based on water quality changes to avoid increased scaling risk due to water quality fluctuations. Simultaneously, continuously record operating parameters to detect and address early signs of scaling.
